Flag football has been building momentum for years, but the last two weeks may have changed everything. On March 30, 2026, the NFL officially announced it is launching professional flag football leagues, one for men and one for women. With a launch target of spring 2027. Backed by some of the biggest names in football history and a $32 million investment from all 32 NFL teams, this is the clearest signal yet that flag football isn't a fringe sport anymore. It's the future.
The announcement came through TMRW Sports, the NFL's developmental and operational partner for the new leagues. The star power behind the project reads like a Hall of Fame induction ceremony: Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, Joe Montana, Steve Young, Larry Fitzgerald, Russell Wilson, and Bobby Wagner are all involved as backers and advisors. Troy Vincent Sr., the NFL's Executive Vice President of Football Operations, framed it perfectly: "A professional flag league completes the pathway for elite athletes to compete at every level of the game, from youth to high school and college, to the Olympic stage, and now professionally."
That Olympic stage reference is no throwaway line. Flag football is set to make its debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and Team USA has already been putting in work. Just two weeks ago at the inaugural Fanatics Flag Football Classic in LA, the U.S. men's national team went a dominant 3-0 against two squads loaded with current and former NFL stars including Brady, Joe Burrow, and Jayden Daniels. Darrell "Housh" Doucette III was named tournament MVP, and the message was loud: elite flag football players have a skill set all their own, and they've earned their respect.
For anyone who coaches, plays, or watches youth flag football, this moment matters enormously. The NFL reports that approximately 4.1 million kids are now playing flag football in the United States. More than a 50% increase since 2020. High school programs exist in 39 states. Women's college flag football has exploded, with 100+ programs now active. The pathway from a youth league Saturday morning to the Olympic stage is real, and it's complete.
The question now isn't whether flag football has arrived. It has. The question is whether your team is ready. Gear up for the next chapter at www.goteamsports.com premium flag football equipment for every level of the game.
